EARTHQUAKES IN NEPAL : 2015

Introduction:

On 25th of April 2015, a massive earthquake devasted Nepal. More than 9000 people died and nearly 22,000 people injured. It occurred at 11:56 Nepal standard time (NST), with the magnitude if 7.8 Mw or 8.1 Ms It’s epicentre was east of Gorkha district Barpak, about 85 km from the capital Kathmandu. The hypocenter was at a depth of approximately 8.2 km (5.1 mi). It was the second biggest earthquake devasted in Nepal after the 1934 Nepal-Bihar Earthquake.

The earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, which killed 21 people. It makes April 25, 2015, the deadliest day in mountain history. This day is also known as 'Black Day' for Nepal and Nepali people.
Aftershocks:
Again, on 12 May 2015, the second major earthquake occurred with a moment magnitude of 7.3 Mw at the south-east of Kothari. The epicentre was near the Nepal-China border between the capital Kathmandu and Mt. Everest. In the second shock, more than 210 people died and 2,500 injured in Nepal as well as in India including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and other North Indian states.
After the main shock, it is assuming that more than 30 aftershocks were occurring above 5 Mw, 460 aftershocks above 4 Mw (Out of which 51 aftershocks are nearly equalled to 5 Mand 5 aftershocks above 6 Mw). And more than 20,000 aftershocks less than 4 Mw until 2016.

Casualties:
The earthquake kills more than 9,000 people in Nepal and more than 3.5 million people were left homeless and helpless. The rural death toll may have been minimized by the fact that most villagers were outdoors working when the quake hit. As of 15 May, 6,271 people, including 1,700 form the 12 May aftershock, were still receiving treatment for their injuries. The scientific cause of earthquakes occur in Nepal every 100 years is due to the movement of tectonic plates.

Damages:

Many constructions are destroyed including old temples, places and other historical places. The capital was destroyed and many people including tourist are killed during this devasted. Due to this earthquake, the Nepal government and Nepali people face many problems. All the damage is still in construction and many people's houses and school college etc are closed due to the damage which directly effects in the economy of Nepal government.

Many people lose their family, many parents lost their children and many children lost their parents. About 1-month people sleep in the ground, streets and roads. Many people losses their house especially in Sindhupalchok, Kathmandu, Gorkha etc.

Geological Reason:

The scientific cause of earthquakes occur in Nepal every 100 years is due to the movement of tectonic plates. Tectonic plates are the large, thin, relatively rigid plates that move relative to one another on the outer surface of the Earth. Plates are always slowly moving, but they get stuck at their edges due to friction. When the stress on the edge overcomes the friction there is an earthquake that releases energy in waves that travel through the Earths crust and cause the shaking that we feel.
